Dengue Cases Spike in Honduras

Number of Cases Reaches 2,900 in Epidemiological Week 24

Honduras' Ministry of Health has declared a national health emergency due to a sharp increase in dengue fever cases. As of epidemiological week 24 (EW24), the country has reported 2,900 cases with 4 deaths. This represents a significant surge from the same period last year, when Honduras recorded only 1,500 cases.

Early Detection and Treatment Key to Preventing Serious Complications

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause a range of symptoms, from mild fever and headache to severe bleeding and organ damage. There is no specific treatment for dengue infection, but early detection and access to appropriate healthcare are crucial for preventing serious complications.

The Ministry of Health is urging the public to take steps to prevent mosquito bites, including using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and eliminating breeding grounds around homes and communities.

Testing and Case Management

The Ministry also announced that it is ramping up testing and case management efforts. The statement added: "The testing process can have a turnaround time of up to two weeks."

Individuals experiencing dengue-like symptoms are advised to seek medical attention promptly.
